TONGA'S official Foreign Reserves fell by $12.3 million from $177.5 million to $165.2 million in January 2011.
The National Reserve Bank of Tonga stated on 14 February 2011 that the current Reserves of $165.2 million is equivalent to 6.9 months of imports of goods. It also stated that the decline in foreign reserves was due mainly to higher import payments in January, mostly for fuel.
Despite the drop in January, the Foreign Reserve was still higher, in comparison with a Reserve of $160.8 million in January 2010.
