Driver charged with manslaughter [1]

A 49 years old woman driver has been charged with manslaughter by negligence, following the death of a 34 years old man from Tofoa on March 13.

The Deputy Police Commander Taniela Faletau, said that the man died after being run over on Vuna Road on Saturday night, 19 February. The man was admitted to Vaiola Hospital but was declared dead on March 13.

The accused will appear at the Magistrate's Court, Nuku'alofa this week.

Fights

Two teenagers, aged 17 and 19 years, were charged by the police for assault and causing disturbances in a public place. The alleged crime related to a fight between the two teenagers and students from Tonga College at Kolofo'ou on March 11.

The Deputy Police Commander said that the two accused were not students from any school, and they were to appear at the Nuku'alofa Magistrate's Court this week.

Crime rate

There was a drop in the number of Crimes registered with the police between March 7 and 13 March, to 66 from 107 the week before.

Thirty five offences were registered at the Central Police Station, Nuku'alofa; 11 at Mu'a station, seven at Nukunuku, six at Leimatu'a, three at Vaini and two each at Pangai, Ha'apai and 'Eua.

Theft was the most prevalent reported crime with 23 offences; followed by 17 housebreaks, eight assaults, five obtaining by false pretences, two indecent assaults, two unlawful entries into buildings, two maiming cattle and one each for attempted suicide, rape, receiving stolen property, fraudulent conversion of property and trespassing.
