Police Commissioner wins the confidence of the public [1]

Auckland, New Zealand

Monday, March 28, 2011 - 21:32.  Updated on Monday, September 9, 2013 - 18:40.

LANGAFONUA Tu’uloa Paati is very concerned about the petitions made by 150 Police Officers to terminate the Employment Contract of the Police Commissioner.

We carried out a quick research of the public and one of the interviewees told us that, before the Police Commander from New Zealand, as he was then, commenced working in Tonga, they reported a burglary in their home to the Police but there was no response at all. The same family experienced another burglary after the Police Commander commenced work and immediately after laying the complaint with the police they turned up within 15 minutes.

A young Police Officer (his name was not asked) was interviewed and his version is that older Police officers do not want changes because they are so comfortable with the old system.

The Police Commissioner has a mission and the mission is to win the confidence of the public in the Police Force and this is one of the means of achieving this.

Promotion based on merits rather than seniority, Independent disciplinary Tribunal rather than Internal Tribunal and setting proper professional conduct are the means to win public confidence in the Police Force.

Every citizen of Tonga has noticed the remarkable improvements in the Tonga Police Force. They start to feel safe and they know if they lay a complaint it will be attended to by the Police.

Langafonua Tu’uloa Party fully supports the Police Commissioner and it is hoped he will continue with his mission until it is accomplished.
