Tonga's PM has not received Fiji's extradition application [1]

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Thursday, May 19, 2011 - 13:27.  Updated on Monday, September 9, 2013 - 18:40.

Tonga's Prime Minister has not received an application by the Fijian government for the extradition of Ratu Tevita Uluilakeba Mara from Tonga, said Busby Kautoke, the Tonga government Chief Secretary and the Secretary to Cabinet today.

Busby said that they had been expecting an application, since it was reported in the media a few days ago.

The Fijijlive Online today, May 19 reported that Fiji's Solicitor-General and Permanent Secretary for Justice Christopher Pryde had confirmed that an application for the extradition of Ratu Tevita Mara had been sent to the Tongan Prime Minister. Christopher Pryde stated that all documentation required under the Tongan Extradition Act had been supplied to the Tongan authorities.

Busby however cautioned that such an application could not be sent by internet, and said that it had to be sent by a carrier service, and there was also the possibility that the Fijian Government was still working on it.

Meanwhile, Ratu Tevita is very busy trying to schedule media appointments in Tonga. He promised that he was coming to Tonga to have the freedom to speak freely, but so far both local and overseas media are waiting for a response to requests for interviews.
