First military contingent to Afghanistan returns safely [1]

The prime Minister Lord Tu'ivakano welcomes returning solidiers at Fua'amotu Airport.

TONGA'S first contingent of 55 soldiers returned from six-months duty in Afghanistan last night, June 16 to an emotional welcome by families and friends at the Fua'amotu International Airport.

The Tongan contingent led by Commander Satisi Vunipola arrived on a commercial flight just after 8pm and were formally welcomed by the Prime Minister Lord Tu'ivakano and the Commander of the Tonga Defence Services, Brigadier Tau'aika 'Uta'atu.

Lord Tu'ivakano thanked God for their safe return and commended them on a job well done and for being good ambassadors for Tonga.

"I am certain that Tonga's second contingent who are now serving in Afghanistan will follow your foot steps and do the same," he said.

The soldiers received an overwhelming welcome outside the terminal by over a hundred relatives and friends.

Tonga's first contingent of 55 soldiers departed Tonga on October 25, 2010 and underwent a six weeks pre-deployment training in England before their deployment to Afghanistan.

Tonga's second contingent to Afghanistan is led by Commander Sione Fifita.
