Jailed woman applies for bail [1]

Jailed brothel keeper, Liu Lirong, has applied for bail pending her appeal against both her conviction and sentence.

A decision on the applications is expected to be delivered by Chief Justice Hon Michael Dishington Scott on Thursday, June 23 at the Supreme Court in Nuku'alofa.

Lirong (45) a Chinese woman was initially sentenced to 10 years imprisonment on May 30 by Justice Robert Shuster after being found guilty on seven counts of people trafficking, trading in prostitution and keeping a brothel in Tongatapu.

Liu through her counsel Laki Niu then appealed against both her conviction and sentence. He also filed an application for Liu to bailed pending her appeal.

Assistant Senior Crown Counsel Sione Sisifa said Liu's bail hearing was held in closed chamber before the Chief Justice on Friday, June 17, at which Liu was present. The judgment would be delivered this Thursday, he said.

Liu's appeal against her conviction and sentence is to be heard at Tonga's Court of Appeal second session later in the year.

Meanwhile, she is currently being kept at Hu'atolitoli Prison at Vaini.
