Tonga rejects Fiji's extradition request [1]

THE Tonga government has rejected an application by the Fijian Government, requesting for the extradition of Ratu Tevita Ululakeba Mara to Fiji.

The Prime Minister's Office on Thursday June 23 stated that Tonga's Ministry of Foreign Affairs had sent 'a diplomatic note' to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation in Suva.

The Prime Minister who is also Tonga's Minister for Foreign Affairs and Defence received an Extradition Request of Ratu Tevita Ululakeba Mara from the government of Fiji on 19 May 2011.

The diplomatic reply stated, "The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Tonga regrets that the Laws of the Kingdom of Tonga do not permit His Majesty's Government to comply with the aforementioned Extradition Request."
