Police identify student who died in altercation [1]

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Thursday, July 14, 2011 - 22:36.  Updated on Wednesday, September 11, 2013 - 09:54.

Police have identifed the man who died in an altercation on Saturday night as Sione Kipione (23), a student at Tonga's Institute of Education from 'Utungake, Vava'u who had been living at Nukunuku.

A security guard has been charged with his murder. Siteiki Tulumi (36) has been kept in police custody after appearing at the Magistrate's Court on July 12. His case was deferred to be submitted to the Supreme Court on August 1.

Police Commissioner Chris Kelley told Matangi Tonga Online on July 14 they had received a post mortem report but because the matter was now with the court and was part of the evidence vital information could not be released at this stage.

He confirmed that the victim received head injuries and that there was no weapon involved during the altercation between him and a male security guard.

Comm Kelley said the post mortem report confirmed what the witnesses told police during their preliminary inquiry, that there was an altercation between the two men and shortly afterward the victim collapsed. The incident took place outside the bar on Vuna road.

Other sources confirmed that the accused was working as a security guard at the Billfish Bar.
