A six-member delegation from the French Senate visited Tonga for the first time this week to learn first hand about Tonga's political, economic social and cultural life.
Led by Senator Jean-Pierre Demerliat of the Haute Vienne constituency, the delegation arrived on July 19 and met Tonga's Prime Minister Lord Tu'ivakano, and the Acting Speaker of the House Lord Tui'afitu. They also visited Langafonua Centre.
Jean Pierre said today, July 22, that their visit had been rewarding and fruitful, as they had gained better understanding on how the Tongan political system works, its reformed parliament structure as well as the social and cultural dynamics that make Tonga unique.
The delegation included the Senator for Finistere Mr Jean-Luc Fichet of the Socialist Party; the Senator for Wallis and Futuna Mr Lopeto Laufoaulu from the Union for a Popular Movement; Mrs Jacqueline Panis from Meurthe-et-Moselle from the Union for a Popular Movement; Senator Fran¸cois Pillet from Cher, the Union for a Popular Movement, and Senator Odette Terrade from the Val-de-Marne constituency of the Communist Party.
Meeting with the Acting Speaker of the Tongan Parliament they learned about Tonga's new parliamentary structure and were informed of the smooth transition that took place in what was Tonga's first democratic election. "We thought this was very historical and important for Tonga," he said.
It is understood that the Senators will present a report of their visit to the French Parliament.
Tonga's Honorary Consul Mrs Tupou Pasikala-Fiu in Nuku'alofa assisted the delegation that departed on July 22.
