Tongatapu 9 by-election on Thursday [1]

AROUND 2,900 registered voters in Tongatapu 9 constituency will go to the polls on Thursday, September 15 in a By Election to elect a new Tongatapu 9 People's Representative to Tonga's Legislative Assembly.

The Supervisor of Elections Pita Vuki said today there are nine polling stations in Tongatapu and there will also be one polling station each in the outer islands of Vava'u, Ha'apai, 'Eua and the two Niuas.

He said there are about 2,900 registered voters in Tongatapu 9. Polling stations would open at 9:00pm and close at 4:00pm and the votes would be counted with the successful candidate to be announced on the same evening.

Six candidates, who are all men, registered to run for the by-election on August 18. They include Falisi Tupou from Tatakamotonga, Seventeen Toumo'ua from Haveluliku, Viliami Fukofuka from Tatakamotonga, 'Epeli Kalemani from Fua'amotu, Siaosi Tu'ipulotu from 'Alakifonua and Konisitutone Kami from Lavengatonga.

The by-election was called to fill the seat vacated by the late Kaveinga Fa'anunu who died recently.

Kaveinga won the seat out of 15 candidates who registered for Tongatapu 9 in the General Election last November.

Tongatapu 9 consists of Tatakamotonga, Holonga, 'Alakifonua, Pelehake, Toloa, Fua'amotu, Nakolo, Lavengatonga, and Ha'asini-Hamula.
