CPAD launched as Tonga celebrates International Day of Peace [1]

Tonga celebrated the United Nation's International Day of Peace on Wednesday evening September 21 with the launching of a new Tonga committee for Capacity for Peace and Development (CPAD) in conjunction with the United Nation Development Program.
Hon Fanetupouvava'u Tu'ivakano in launching CPAD said she was pleased with the new initiative. "It is important for us to work together in peace in order to achieve peace and prosperity for Tonga," she said.
'Alisi Taumoepeau, CPAD's Deputy Chairperson and keynote speaker, said the CPAD had a role in development of capacity relating to peace and development in Tonga.
Regionally, CPAD is linked to the Pacific Islands Forum which is also committed to peace building in the region, she said. "And globally we celebrate the UN International Day of Peace and it is our wish and prayer that peace surpasses all understanding from today onwards."
CPAD Tonga is chaired by Lord Fakafanua with 'Alisi Taumoepeau as Deputy Chairperson. The secretaries are 'Ofa Masila and Siale 'Ilolahia, with members Elsie Tupou, Po'oi Pohiva and Pesi Fonua.
Attending the ceremony at the Loumaile Lodge was Rev Dr Mele'ana Puloka, the Acting Police Commissioner Taniela Faletau, Minister of Labour and Commerce 'Hon 'Isileli Pulu, the Fetu'ungingila Church Group, the Tonga Police Brass Band and guests including the UNDP Country Officer Milika Tuita.
Non-Violence
Meanwhile, the UN Secretary General Bank Ki Moon in his message to mark the International Day of Peace, urged people around the world commit to non-violence and to harmony among all peoples and nations. "Peace is our mission, our day-to-day guest and this year's theme focuses on the timely issue of peace and democracy, as democracy is the core value of the UN," he said.
The first Peace Day was observed in September 1982.
