Judge orders arrest of Tonga's Speaker, Lasike [1]

JUSTICE Robert Shuster ordered a warrant of arrest to be issued for Lord Lasike the Speaker of Parliament, after he did not turn up at the Supreme Court for arraignment on a count of unlawful possession of ammunition, this morning, October 14.

Lord Lasike is charged unlawful possession of two .22 rifle bullets.

The court opened at 9:30am and when Lasike's name was called by the police usher it became clear that he was not present. Justice Shuster then ordered for a warrant of arrest to be issued and for bail to be refused for the noble.

The one count of unlawful possession of ammunition is related to the two .22 rifle bullets found by police on June 28, 2010 during a search warrant conducted at a room, said to have been occupied by Lord Lasike, at his motel Sandy Boyz in central Nuku'alofa.

The Supreme Court office is expected to issue the warrant of arrest document to the police for action.

Lord Lasike is understood to be somewhere in Nuku'alofa as he was present at parliament's sitting this week.
