A total of 64 candidates, the most ever, are standing in Tonga's General Election to be held on March 16-17 this year, to decide the nine Noble's seats and nine People's seats in the Tongan Legislative Assembly.

Candidates paid a $200 registration fee, along with the supporting signatures of 50 registered voters.

There are six women candidates this year compared with two in the last election

Tongatapu has the biggest number of candidates, which went up from 16 in the last election to 31 this year, competing for three seats.
