Six outstanding women from different walks of life in Tongatapu who despite the everyday struggle of trying to earn a living for their family had emerged successful, were applauded today with a special presentation of gift packs and money in celebration of the International Women's Day on March 8.

Organised by the International Women's Day Planning Committee, the nominees from the Eastern, Western and Central District were nominated by their respective district officers and town officers. They were selected based on their efforts by single-handedly providing for their families and at the same time contributing to the progress of their communities.

The nominees, mostly widows and single mothers, had overcome the challenges by successfully finding ways to earn a living through plantations cultivation, tapa making, sewing and selling crops at the Talamahu Market. Some have put their children through school, even universities, while others had seen their success through their children who had in return built their homes.

The women recognised are Kalesita Pongi (57) of Kolovai; Leilini 'Afa (35) of 'Ahau; Kakala Fangatua (51) of Veitongo; Nauna Fisi'ihoi of Tatakamotonga; Piuaki Fifita (50) of Lavengatonga and Mele Taiseni of Fangaloto.

The Chair of the International Women's Day Organising Committee, Si'atu Vaea, said that in preparation for this year's IWD theme "Equal rights, equal opportunities: Progress for all," this program was initiated to recognise women from different communities who had contributed positively to increasing opportunities and progress for their individual families.

"These ladies have been chosen to be acknowledged for their everyday struggle to raise their children and they have emerged successfully through the challenges they meet and progress made towards improving their standard of living," she said.

The presentations included a cash donation from the Australian High Commissioner HE Dr Bruce Hunt, and gift packs from Digicel.

A documentary featuring the everday lives of these women would also be broadcasted on national television on the International Women Day on March 8.

Dr Hunt, a major donor to the International Women's Day event, applauded the seven women in doing a fabulous job in improving the livelihoods of their family and community as a whole.

He said women drive the country and pointed out the significance of recognising women and encouraging their progress in all walks of life.
