Rehydrated, Lord Dalgety expected to continue evidence [1]

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Thursday, February 25, 2010 - 22:45.  Updated on Friday, May 9, 2014 - 21:44.

Shipping Corporation Company Secretary Lord Dalgety who has been missing in action at the Royal Commission of Inquiry into the sinking of the Ashika since January 22 is expected to continue his evidence this week after it was confirmed by a doctor that his medical condition was that of dehydration.

Dr Veisinia Matoto a Medical Practitioner at the Medical Ward of Vaiola Hospital in Nuku'alofa confirmed that Dalgety was admitted to the hospital on February 19 and was discharged today February 25, as she was satisfied he would make a full recovery at home.

She asserted that Dalgety was admitted to the Medical Ward under her charge, and through her examination she found that the only medical condition he was suffering from was dehydration and he was put under the drip, and that was the only treatment he received.

She confirmed upon questions from Counsel Assisting Manuel Varitimos that this was simply a case of dehydration. She also confirmed that surgeons saw Dalgety but to her knowledge he required no surgery.

"So would there be any difficulty if he was to give evidence here tomorrow?, the counsel assisting said.

The doctor confirmed that Dalgety could walk up to the stand and give evidence because he was walking to and from the hospital upon admission and when he was discharged.

Lord Dalgety is under fire at the inquiry after evidence pointed to his use of public funds for possible private travels under the Electricity Commission. This is in addition to his principle evidence as Company Secretary for SCP.
