New NZ High Commissioner for Tonga [1]

The newly appointed New Zealand High Commissioner to Tonga, Mr Michael McBryde arrives in Tonga tomorrow to take up his office on December 15.

Mr McBryde is a career diplomat who was deputy director of the New Zealand Foreign Affairs and Trade Ministry's environment division. He replaces Mr Warwick Hawker.

Mr McBryde performed his first function for the Tongan community before he left New Zealand. He was the Guest of Honour at the Wellington launching of the new book Songs and Poems of Queen Salote in the Wellington City Council Chambers on November 27. He said he was looking forward to his new appointment in Tonga and had been studying the Tongan language. Mr McBryde launched the book at a function attended by over 70 Tongans and expatriates. The launch was sponsored by Lose Miller-Helu's TapaFa Gallery of Petone, the Wellington distributor of the new book.

Mary Fonua, of Vava'u Press, Publishers, meets Guest of Honour Michael McBryde, at the Wellington launch of the book Songs & Poems of Queen Salote on 27 November.
