Drunk driver guilty of manslaughter [1]

Jurors today found Alani Vaomotou of Vaotu'u guilty of manslaughter by negligence in drunken driving that killed his passenger in 2007 at Halaliku.

The seven jurors' delivered their guilty verdict this afternoon,

September 18 and he will be sentenced by Justice Peter Salmon next month.

The accused appeared for the start of his jury trial on September 16 and pleaded not guilty to firstly manslaughter by negligence and to an alternative charge of drunken driving.

On April 29, 2007 in a drunken state he was driving a motor vehicle at Halaliku when he lost control of the vehicle causing it to overturn and killing his passenger, Falakiko Helu.

Crown Prosecutor was 'Elisapeta Lavakei'aho with 'Ofa Pouono represented the accused.
