Loloahi from Leimatu'a, causes a stir in Whitehall [1]

Loloahi Tapui (27) from Leimatu'a, Vava'u, a housekeeper of Baroness Scotland of Asthal, the British Attorney General has caused a stir in Whitehall when it was discovered this week that Loloahi was an illegal migrant.

The story of Loloahi has made the front-pages in some of the British daily papers, such as the 'Daily Mail', and while investigation is on going there is a growing pressure from the Tories for the Baroness to resign.

The irony of the situation was that Lady Scotland helped steer through Parliament, when she was a Home Office minister, the 2006 Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act. Under the Act it is a Civil offence to employ an illegal migrant, whether or not the Employer knows their status. Since the legislation came into force last year, 2,400 cases have resulted in fines, totaling more than 23 million English pounds.

According to a report in the Daily Mail of September 17, Loloahi arrived in London in 2003 as a tourist and because of her Tongan nationality she could stay in the UK without a visa for no longer than six months. At the end of the six months period Loloahi applied for a student visa, and she was given a one-year visa and a National Insurance number. The National Insurance number is the magic number to enable one to find employment in the UK.

Loloahi attempted twice in 2004 and 2005 to renew her student visa but she was turned down and since then she became one of the two million illegal migrants who are working in the UK.

A report in the UK Press said that Loloahi is living with her partner, a British national, in a "smart West London block." Just last year Loloahi advertised herself on internet sites as a cleaner and babysitter 'available to work at any time'. During the past six months she worked at the two million pounds Victorian home of Lady Scotland near the Thames, and her housekeeper's duties included dog walking, rubbish removal and sweeping leaves.

The discovery that Loloahi was an illegal migrant was a big embarrassment for the Rt Hon. The Baroness Scotland of Asthal, (54) who was Britain's first black female QC, and the first female Attorney General since the post was created in 1315.

Baroness Scotland was born in Dominica to Antiguan and Dominican parents, but she moved to Britain when she was three.
