Armed robbers who held up a Nuku'alofa shopkeeper on Thursday, are being hunted by police.

The two men, disguised and armed with a firearm and a knife, robbed a Chinese shopkeeper on Hala Tupoulahi at Kolofo'ou and fled with $600 cash and $600 worth of phone cards after the hold-up at 8:30pm on August 27.

Tonga Police Commander Chris Kelley, in his Weekly Crime Report yesterday September 1, said that the police were still hunting down the robbers.

The shopkeeper was unharmed and no further details were released as police are continuing their investigation.

Assault charges

In another incident the Commander said that four men had been arrested and charged with serious assault after attacking police officers and injuring one of them on Saturday.

He said four police officers were responding to a noisy party at a house in Sopu, on Hala Vuna at 8:30am on August 29. The occupants of the house attacked the police officers, injuring one officer who ended up at Vaiola hospital after being assaulted with a chair.

The injured officer was discharged today, said the Commander.
