SCP releases ferry disaster survivor list [1]

'Akanesi Havili from Fasi has just learned that her son Mone, a crew member, is safe. But she tearfully tells Linny Folau that their friends who were passengers travelling to Pangai for a wedding, Valele 'Elone, the groom; his cousin, Veuso 'Elone; and friend Matoni 'Aho are missing. They were from the All Saints Anglican Church of Fasi.

Of the 96 people who left Nuku'alofa on board the MV Princess Ashika, yesterday, according to the Shipping Corporation of Polynesia Ltd. list released at around midday today, the known survivors include 27 crew and 23 passengers, at this early stage thought to be all male.

Meanwhile, survivors report that at least one body of a European male has been recovered and that most of the women and children on the passenger list are among the missing. A surviving crew member believes that two other Europeans and one Japanese volunteer are among the missing passengers.

Family of Princess Ashika passengers wait for news outside the Shipping Corporation of Polynesia offices at lunchtime today.



About 100 people were waiting for the survivor list to be released from SCP today.



Gathering outside the SCP offices today, crying families were too upset to talk about their relatives who are missing after the Princess Ashika sinking.

The Captain's wife Stella Tuputupu learns that her husband was saved.



Clinging to hope, Nomiola Hikila (73) of Ma'ufanga said his son Tupou (39) is missing. Tupou was going to see his wife who was in Ha'afeva visiting family.
