Tonga is showcasing for the first time a special Tonga Cultural Heritage Exhibition titled "Kava Kuo Heka" featuring the work of local artists as well as cultural performances.

Organised by the Ministry of Education, Women's Affairs and Culture through a Tonga Exhibition Organising Committee, the three-day exhibition opened this morning is free for the public at the Fa'onelua Convention Centre.

Hon Tu'ilokomana Tuita, a member of the organising committee, said today the purpose of the exhibition is to encourage talented Tongan artists and showcase their carvings, painting and weaving.

It is also directed at creating awareness amongst the public on the importance of preserving and continuing our traditions and culture, she said.

Some of the Tongan artists whose work is on display include Steven Fehoko a carver and canoe builder; 'Eseta Homes 'Aholelei, a painter and sculptor; Hakeai Vehikite Piutau a painter; Moana Guttenbeil a fashion designer; and Tevita Ika a painter, carver and screen painter.

The exhibition held as part of the King's birthday celebrations was opened by HRH Princess Pilolevu Tuita this morning, before a public viewing opened for school students, tourists, and the public.
