Newington College, in Sydney, is strengthening its historical links with Tonga by offering a new two-year scholarship to a Tongan student.

Newington Headmaster, Dr David Mulford, and the President of the Old Newingtonians Union, Mark Bland, will visit Tonga next week to talk to Form Five and Form Six students who might be interested in taking up their studies at Newington.

The all-boys Uniting Church School was attended by Tonga's King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV.

In 1864 with the first Headmaster of Newington Rev James Moulton was a missionary in Tonga.

The headmaster's visit to Tonga is aimed not only at renewing and enriching its links with Tonga but it is also an opportunity for him to catch up with Newington Old Boys who are still living in Tonga.

"I am thrilled to be coming to Tonga to meet with so many of our distinguished Old Boys and talk to the fine young men who are interested in coming to Newington. Our school has an excellent relationship with Tonga and we are most keen to see this grow and deepen over time," said Dr Mulford.

Sitiveni Takaetali Finau and Noble Luani are two old boys in Tonga who are helping to coordinate the visit.

The scholarship is in recognition of the long and warm friendship between the Old Boys of Tonga, Newington College. and the Old Newingtonians Union ONU, in collaboration with the headmaster.
