People's Reps differ on Ministerial appointments [1]

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Tonga's People's Representatives were divided in their views on the move by the Tongan government to appoint four new ministers from the elected members of the House next year.

The Tongatapu no. 3 People's Representative, 'Isileli Pulu said in a Press Conference on Friday, November 12, that if he was offered a ministerial appointment by the King, he would it turn down.

'Isileli said that if he was re-elected next year and happened to be appointed by the King as a Cabinet Minister he would turn it down, because he did not think he could worship "two gods", meaning the people who elected him into the House and the King who appoints Cabinet Ministers.

'Isileli expressed his disappointment with the move, for the Prime Minister to recommend to the King for the appointment of new four Cabinet Ministers, chosen from the People's Representatives and Noble's Representatives from the 18 elected members of parliament next year. He described the move as a, "bit of beautification exercise."

The other People's Representatives at the Press Conference, 'Akilisi Pohiva, Fineasi Funaki and Peauafi Haukinima, took a different view from 'Isileli Pulu, they agreed that the opportunity for the people to elect Cabinet Ministers was the beginning of a genuine political reform, allowing people to elect their leaders.
