Tuesday, April 14, 2009 - 17:26.  Updated on Friday, September 12, 2014 - 13:26.

The 250 Tongan students at the USP Suva, Fiji are safe, and are attending their normal classes today, according to the Acting Director of the University of the South Pacific USP Tonga campus, Dr Seu'ula Fua this afternoon.

Dr Seu'ulua Fua said she received a confirmation from the USP Vice Chancellor this morning that "everything is fine and secure at the university and students are in class.

"At the same time security at the campus has been heightened."

A first year Tongan student at USP told Matangi Tonga this morning that life was normal at the USP Campus. "The only visible restriction is an increase in the number of security check- points into city, and into the USP campus, apart from that everything is peaceful and students are free to move about in the city", he said.

A Tongan lady from Nadi but was in Suva this morning reported "that it was business as usual in Suva this morning."

The Air Pacific head office in Nuku'alofa this morning, also confirmed that the airline's twice weekly service to Suva and Nadi will still be flying as scheduled.

No reaction from friends

Fiji hit the World News on Friday, April 10 when President Ratu Josefa Iloilo abrogated the Constitution, fired all the judges then declared himself, Head of state. He also declared that a General Election will take place in 2014.

The President's reaction was in response to a Court of Appeal decision, declaring that the Fiji military government of Commodore Frank Bainimarama was illegal.

In a very orderly sequence of events. After the Court of Appeal made its decision on Thursday, April 9, the Commodore resigned and went home. On Good Friday, April 10 President Iloilo went through the routine of making himself Head of State, then recalled the Commodore and his Military Government into Power on April 11. In two days he was back in power.

Following President Iloilo's declaration Fiji's membership in both the Commonwealth and Pacific Islands Forum stand to be suspended.

To date there has been no official reaction from neither the Commonwealth, the Pacific Islands Forum, nor from Prime Minister of Tonga, Dr Feleti Sevele.
