Rioter who destroyed supermarket awaits sentencing [1]

Vilisoni Tauelangi, a 34 year old man from Pea, Tongatapu, will be sentenced on Friday, February 13 for riotous assembly and the destruction of the Molisi Tonga supermarket during the Nuku'alofa riots of November 16, 2006.

The accused was scheduled to appear at the Nuku'alofa Supreme Court for sentencing today, but it was postponed to February 13 at the request of his counsel.

Tauelangi was tried by jury on five charges and on December 9, 2008 was found guilty on two charges of riotous assembly and destruction of the Molisi.

He was acquitted on the remaining three charges, including the destruction of the Rainbow Chinese store, the destruction of the Fung Shing shop and an attempted destruction charge on the Central Police Station in Nuku'alofa.
