The Taimi on January 28 reports that a policeman Kautai Taunauta will be tried at the Supreme Court on a charge of acquiring goods through fraudulent means. Taunauta from the Crime Investigation Unit of the Nuku'alofa Central Police Station had investigated a purchase of 20 cartons of mutton. Ten cartons were seized and then returned. But it is claimed that the other ten cartons were sold for $1,360 and the money was given to Kautai and a colleague. Then most of the money then went missing.

The Kele'a on January 28 reports that the Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga, the most populous church in Tonga, is applying for an FM radio license.

The Talaki on January 28 reports that heavily pregnant 'Ivoni Fuimaono, whose son Halatau Naitoko was accidentally shot dead by New Zealand police, is expecting a baby boy whom she will name Halatau.

And a spat between the Prime Minister's Office and the Ministry of Justice over the construction of an office and quarters for the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation, has been resolved.

The Kalonikali on January 29 reports that the Tonga Defence Services patrol boat VOEA Savea sailed with more than a hundred teachers for Vava'u, Ha'apai and the two Niuas at the request of the Ministry of Education. The school year had already started but there wasn't a ferry to take the teachers. The Ministry of Education paid for the fuel.
