TI Fiji calls for a Freedom of Information Act [1]

Suva, Fiji

Friday, January 9, 2009 - 09:34.  Updated on Tuesday, January 13, 2015 - 20:33.

There is urgent need for a national Freedom of Information Act quickly, says Transparency International Fiji chairperson, Suliana Siwatibau.

Her comments came after an announcement by the interim administration that the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption would be given powers to investigate civil servants who leaked information.

Mrs Siwatibau said the interpretation of the term misconduct in law could be debated.

Fijian Teachers Association general secretary Maika Namudu said the interim regime was "becoming more vicious".

While Soqosoqo Duavata ni Lewenivanua party executive director Peceli Kinivuwai questioned accountability and transparency of the interim regime, Citizens Constitutional Forum executive director Reverend Akuila Yabaki called on the interim regime to release the text of the amendment to the promulgation.
