Tongan rugby player held over theft [1]

A 24-year-old Toshiba Brave Lupus rugby player has been arrested on suspicion of theft, The Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper has learned.

According to the Tokyo police, Vivili Iongi, a Tongan national, stole a bag containing 10,000 yen (about TOP$232) from a 60-year-old taxi driver Sunday morning. The bag was placed near the front passenger seat and was taken when Iongi and two acquaintances alighted from the taxi in Shibuya Ward, Tokyo, at about 5 a.m.

Iongi and the other two were found at a nearby restaurant later after the police were informed of the theft.

The suspect, who sat in the front passenger seat during the journey, confessed to the theft and was arrested, the police said. The Yomiuri Himbun, 06/01/09.
