A Royal Land Commission that was established on October 10 has a mandate to investigate land practices and to present a report to HM King George Tupou V by October 2011.
The Royal Land Commission was established "to inquire into all matters concerning the land laws and practices in Tonga in order to provide more effective and efficient practices without changing the basic land tenure of our Kingdom," according to a statement released today by the commission.
The Commission was appointed by HM King George Tupou V in exercise of his powers under the Royal Commissions Act (Cap. 41).
The Commissioners of the Royal Land Commission are Baron Fielakepa (chairman), Lord Tupou, Kahungunu Barron Afeaki and Robina Nakao. The Secretary of the Royal Land Commission is Gloria Pole'o.
Gloria said that the commission had yet to finalise its working schedule but it would like the public to know that they would be holding public meetings throughout the country in the coming months.
"Comments and submissions to the Royal Land Commission will be invited on the existing land laws and practices, including any specific problem areas and how it may be improved to ensure efficiency."
