Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Tuesday, October 28, 2008 - 19:18.  Updated on Thursday, September 11, 2014 - 14:41.

The bodies of two newborns found dumped in two separate locations in Tongatapu only one day after the other were identified as a four months foetus and a near-full term baby of eight months gestation at the times of their deaths, the Deputy Police Commander Taniela Faletau confirmed today.

He said the four months old foetus was wrapped in a piece of cloth and left at an old quarry at Makapaeo, an area between Liahona and Houma, on Thursday, October 16 where it was discovered by a man in the area.

A medical examination had confirmed that the foetus was born prematurely only two hours prior to its discovery. The mother had not been discovered, said Taniela. "We are calling on the public support in our ongoing investigation."

New-born baby

The second body, that of a fully developed newborn of eight months gestation, was discovered on Saturday, October 18 in a trash can at a home in Tatakamotonga at the Eastern side of Tongatapu.

A person at the home discovered the baby as she was sweeping the yard.

The Commander also confirmed they had found the mother who is a 24 year old woman from 'Eua who lived at the Tatakamotonga home where the baby was dumped.

He said the mother was admitted to hospital for treatment but she may be charged with offences such as the concealing of a birth.
