Chaudhry fights to protect his reputation [1]

Suva, Fiji

Tuesday, October 7, 2008 - 11:51.  Updated on Thursday, September 11, 2014 - 15:13.

Fiji Labour Party general secretary Mahendra Pal Chaudhry will file lawsuits against more media organisations tomorrow after filing one today against the National Federation Party and Fiji Times Ltd.

Chaudhry's lawyer, Rajendra Chaudhry, said they lodged defamation claims against the NFP, its president Raman Pratap Singh, Fiji Times Ltd, its publisher Rex Gardiner and Fiji Times journalist Mary Rauto.

Chaudhry said his client was labelled as a traitor to the indigenous community and this was then publicised by the newspaper.

He added that they were now waiting for the respondents and that the damages would be decided by the court.

He said his client instructed him to file claims and more media companies would face similar lawsuits.

No dates have yet been set by the courts.

Chaudhry has a pending $1 billion defamation case against The Fiji Times Ltd over a story the newspaper ran, claiming the Labour leader had millions of dollars stashed in foreign bank accounts. FijiLive/Pacific Media Watch, 06/10/08.
