Tonga's third contingent of 55 soldiers who were on a peacekeeping duty in Iraq arrived home on Saturday, September 20.

The contingent under the command of Lt. Col. Kuli Fakalolo arrived at Fua'amotu International Airport on an Air Pacific flight.

Lt. Col. Fakalolo said in recognition of their service the Tongan contingent was awarded Army Achievement Medals and Certificates from Major General Paul Lefebvre of the United States Marines.

The soldiers are currently on leave to spend time with their families before resuming work on October 13.

The troops since February 18 were based at Camp Victory in Baghdad, the headquarters of the Multinational Force, at the Al Faw Palace. During their six months deployment they provided security for all entry control points into the Al Faw Palace, provided perimeter defence and direction to VIP guests and assisted in any emergency.

Meanwhile, Tonga's fourth contingent of 55 soldiers is currently serving in Iraq under the command of Com. Satisi Vunipola and Capt. Carl Tu'ivai. The fourth contingent left Tonga on August 12.
