The Heilala 9s rugby league tournament has returned for its second year, with teams from across Tonga gathering at Teufaiva Stadium in Nuku'alofa, yesterday 3 July, for the opening day of the three-day competition.

The tournament, held as part of the annual Heilala Festival celebrations marking the King's Birthday, features 16 men's teams and eight women's teams representing Tongatapu and the outer islands.

Ha'apai opened the tournament with a hard-fought victory over Lapaha in the first match of the day under clear skies over Tongatapu.

The second fixture saw Vava'u and 'Eua produce a spirited and skilful contest, showcasing the standard of rugby league across the country.

Organisers say the competition aims to promote rugby league while bringing together players from communities throughout Tonga, including representatives from the outer islands.

The Minister for Education and Training, Hon. Dr Mo'ale 'Otunuku, attended the opening day as the guest of honour.

The men's competition features teams from Ha'apai Veu, Lapaha, Vava'u, 'Eua, Toloa, Mu'a, Broncos, Vaota Koula, Ha'alalo, Kolofo'ou, Fo'i 'One'one, Hihifo, Houma, Vaini, Liahona and Havelu.

The women's draw includes teams from Ha'apai, Lapaha, Havelu, Kolofo'ou, Mu'a, Maui Fusifonua, Halatoamui and Vaini.

The Heilala 9s competition continues over the next two days, with men's and women's teams competing for the 2026 tournament titles.
