Secondary Schools Football season kicks off [1]

The 2026 secondary schools football competition has officially kicked off, with hundreds of students taking to the field in the first round, at Veitongo Soccer Field on Friday.
Three matches were played simultaneously across the venue, showcasing the growing popularity of football among secondary school students in Tonga.
On the first field, Takuilau College and Havelu Middle School's Under-16 girls produced an entertaining match, combining friendly sportsmanship with impressive football skills.
The second field featured Tonga High School and Liahona High School's Under-18 girls in a competitive and skilful contest, with both sides displaying strong teamwork and determination throughout the match.
Meanwhile, on the third field, a display of an intense Under-16 boys encounter between Tonga College 'Atele and 'Apifo'ou College. Both teams played with pace and discipline in one of the day's most competitive fixtures.
The annual competition features 11 secondary schools from across Tongatapu competing in boys' and girls' divisions ranging from Under-14 to Under-18 age groups.
Participating schools are Tonga High School, Tonga Side School, Liahona High School, Liahona Middle School, Queen Salote College, 'Apifo'ou College, Tonga College 'Atele, Tupou College Toloa, Takuilau College, Havelu Middle School and Pakilau Middle School.
Organisers said the competition is to encourage participation and enjoyment of the sport, regardless of skill level.
"The competition is not only for the best players. It is open to all school students who wants to play football, develop their skills and enjoy the game."
The Organisers said young players should not feel pressured to pursue professional careers but instead focus on learning and enjoying the sport.
"Who knows? Football may become a young player's talent and future career path, but for now it is about participation, development and enjoying the game."
The competition will continue over the coming weeks, providing young footballers with opportunities to develop their skills and represent their schools in one of Tonga's largest school sporting events.
