Jurors aquit three accused of 16/11 deaths, abetment [1]

Jurors acquitted Tongatapu no. 2 People's Representative 'Isileli Pulu on all eight charges of abetment to murder and one charge of abetment to arson at the Nuku'alofa Supreme Court this afternoon.

'Isi was charged in relation to the eight deaths that resulted from the Shoreline fire on November 16, 2006.

The jurors similarly found the two co-accused Sosefo 'Amone and Siosiua 'Ulutaufonua not guilty on nine counts each of murder and arson endangering life also related to the deaths in the Shoreline Office fire.

The pair were alleged to have set the fire to the Shoreline building and Pulu was alleged to have abetted them to commit the crime to burn down the building.

The Supreme Court then continued to read alternative charges on each accused after they were found not guilty on their initial charges.

Jurors again acquitted 'Amone and 'Ulutaufonua on nine alternative charges each of manslaughter and arson. At the same Pulu was also acquitted by jurors on eight alternative charges of abetment to manslaughter and one of abetment to arson.

After the jurors declared their verdict Justice Warwick Andrew formally discharged the three men.

The jury who was selected from the Kolofo'ou area began deliberating their verdict this morning.

The trial began in the Nuku'alofa Supreme Court on June 17.
