HM King Tupou VI officially commissioned the Mango Housing Resettlement in ‘Eua on Saturday, 28 February 2026, handing over 12 newly completed homes to families displaced by the devastating Hunga Tonga–Hunga Haʻapai eruption of 15 January 2022.
The resettlement initiative is part of the Paletu‘a Project, led by the King and Queen, aimed at rebuilding safe and secure housing for affected communities following the HTHH disaster.
There are 12 homes that have been completed, with two houses currently still under construction.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Principal Assistant Secretary at the Palace Office, Mosese Vakasiuola, acknowledged that the Mango Housing Resettlement had experienced significant delays since 2023.
The project was initially scheduled to begin in December 2023 but Vakasiuola said that complications with the government of the time, had contributed to the prolonged delay.
The housing project cost more than $5 million and was made possible through the combined support of multiple donors and partners, including: HM Queen Nanasipau'u's Charity, Tongan Government, People's Republic of China, King Salman Foundation, Nippon Foundation, Aus Aid through CARE Australia, IFAD through Tonga Rural Innovation Project Tool, Tonga Relief Support of America, MORDI Tonga, Thailand Rotary Club Members, and Nuku’alofa Rotary Club.
