Two written nominations of candidates for Prime Minister Designate were received before the deadline at 4:30pm today, the Chief Clerk of the Legislative Assembly of Tonga confirmed this evening. The names will be disclosed on Monday when elected representatives meet to choose the next Prime Minister.

After the nominations closed, the Interim Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, Lord Tangi ‘o Vaonukonuka, issued a notice for the meeting to be convened on Monday 15 December 2025, at 10:00am at the Legislative Assembly of Tonga.

“A total of two written nominations of candidates for Prime Minister Designate were received. The first written nomination was received on Thursday 4 December 2025, and the second written nomination was received on Wednesday 10 December 2025,” stated the Chief Clerk.

The election of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Assembly will be held at the same meeting, following the announcement of the elected Prime Minister Designate.

This meeting will be broadcasted live on radio, livestream and social media.
