A new water supply system for the Hangai Tokelau settlement in Tokomololo was handed over on 14 November, by the Acting Ambassador of Japan to Tonga, H.E. Mr. Daishouji Toshiyuki.

The USD $72,824 grant funded the installation of a new electric water pump, a tank stand, a 10,000 L water tank, and 1.2km of main water pipes for the new settlement.

HE Mr. Daishouji Toshiyuki said, “A stable supply of clean water is a basic human need, and the Government of Japan decided to upgrade the water supply system in the hope that it will resolve the water shortage and help prevent the spread of infectious diseases.”

"It is a fact that accessing clean water is essential for a healthy life and good hygiene. I hope the community will make good use of the new system and ensure that their homes are healthy and free from water borne diseases,” he said.

This new system is expected to solve inadequate supply of water to households, ensuring a reliable and steady supply of clean water.

The project was funded by the Government of Japan's Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP).
