People to march for Freedom of expression [1]

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Thursday, October 2, 2003 - 14:45.  Updated on Thursday, May 1, 2014 - 15:33.

Tonga's "March for Freedom" will begin in the three main centres at 12 noon on Monday October 6, the same day that Parliament is due to debate Constitutional change.

The government is proposing to change Clause 7 of the Constitution in order to neutralise Freedom of Speech and silence their critics in the Kingdom.

The marchers are organised by the People's Representatives to the Legislature.

In Tongatapu 'Uliti Uata said the marchers will assemble at noon, with the march to start at 1 p.m. in the following places:

Tongatapu: from the Catholic Basilica on the Taufa'ahau Road down to the Hala Vuna and then turn right at the Hala Lelue and stop at the parliament.

Ha'apai: from the Roman Catholic church at Ha'atou to the governor's office or to the government office at Ha'apai.

Vava'u: from the Roman Catholic church at Falaleu to the Governor's office.

'Eua: from the free Wesleyan Church at 'Ohonua to the government office.

At each destination there will be a speech and then submission of the petitions. Uata says people will then stay there until there is a reply from parliament.

A letter has been given to the police department to ask for legal protection. 'Uliti Uata said this type of march is legal and there was only the need for the police to protect the protesters.
