Tonga Health Minister attends UN Social Summit at Qatar [1]

Tonga’s Minister for Health Hon. Dr ‘Ana ‘Akau’ola led a Tongan delegation to the Second World Summit for Social Development, convened by the United Nations (UN), from 4-6 November, in Doha, Qatar.

The summit gathers world leaders, UN agencies, international organizations, civil society, academia, and the private sector to accelerate global action on poverty eradication, full employment, decent work, and social inclusion. eradication, full employment, decent work, and social inclusion.

Tonga’s delegation will participate in sessions and bilateral meetings on key focus areas, include strengthening social protection systems, advancing inclusive policies, promoting equitable opportunities for all citizens, and supporting sustainable development initiatives that leave no one behind.

The Prime Minister’s Office stated, “This engagement underscores Tonga’s commitment to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and ensures that the perspectives and challenges of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) are represented on the global stage.”

“Through active engagement at the Summit, Tonga seeks to exchange best practices, build strategic partnerships, and leverage technical and financial support for national and regional social development programs.

“The Government of Tonga remains committed to advancing social justice, people-centered development, and inclusive social progress, and looks forward to a successful and transformative Summit that strengthens its role as a proactive contributor to global social development agendas.”

Tonga’s delegation includes ‘Akanesi Taufa (Prime Minister’s Office), Sioape Kupu (Ministry of Health), and Samiuela Pohiva (Ministry of Internal Affairs).
