IRB appoints Des to sort out mess at TRU [1]

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Tuesday, June 3, 2008 - 13:24.  Updated on Tuesday, July 28, 2015 - 15:32.

Highlights from Tonga's newspapers, May 26-29, 2008. An English translation summary by Tevita Fonua.

The Taimi on May 26 reports that the plaintiff's first witness to take the stand in the Tu'i Ha'ateiho paternity suit was a 69-year old woman 'Akanesi Tu'ifua Mahafutau who told the court that she had overheard the late 'Akau'ola declaring that the present Tu'i Ha'ateiho, still a toddler at the time, was his son. But under cross-examination by the defendant's attorney she conceded that she was in fact a girlfriend of 'Akau'ola.

According to an interpretation in the Kele'a on May 28, Dr Greg Clydesdale described Pacific Islanders as in the frontline of all things horrid in New Zealand.

The Talaki on May 28 reports that the People's Representatives have changed tack from the premise that change will take place in 2008, to guarantee only this year that there will be change; but are purposely keeping their followers in the dark, so that it will be easier to rally them.

The Talaki reports the representatives now acknowledge the stupidity of agenda change 2010 saying Tonga's new parliament that is being touted may look like this; a Prime Minister, 14 Ministers, 9 Nobles' Representatives, and 2 People's Representatives.

The Taimi on May 29 reports that the IRB has appointed New Zealander Des Carter to sort out the mess at the Tonga Rugby Union Board.

The Taimi also states that some Demo supporters are furious that 'Akilisi had held a secret meeting with Prime Minister Dr. Feleti Sevele.

The Kalonikali on May 29 reports that the daring armed robbery outside the Westpac Bank in Nuku'alofa took place at a time when Nuku'alofa was teeming with people as parents were collecting their children from school and people were rushing to banks, offices and shops before these closed.
