Tonga to chair Polynesian Leaders Group in 2026 [1]

At its 14th meeting in Honiara yesterday, the Polynesian Leaders Group (PLG) agreed for Tonga to chair the Polynesian Leaders Meeting which will reconvene in the next Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting in Palau in 2026.
The PLG meeting is held in the Solomon Islands, alongside the 54th Pacific Islands Forum Meeting.
Key topics discussed in the meeting included the consensus on procedural matters of the PLG's charter, terms of reference, membership and the permanent secretariat.
The PLG meeting was chaired by Hon. Dalton Tagelagi, Prime Minister of Niue who assumed the Chair at the meeting of the PLG in 2024 in Tonga.
The leaders thanked the Prime Minister of Niue for his leadership over the past year, highlighting the importance of inclusion of all Polynesian people to the PLG.
The Meeting was attended by Prime Ministers Tagelagi, Mark Brown and Hon. Dr 'Aisake Valu Eke, President Moetai Brotherson, and high-level representatives of Leaders from Tuvalu and Samoa.
PLG Members and Pacific Islands Forum Associate Members, American Samoa, Tokelau and Wallis and Futuna could not attend the Forum Meetings in Honiara.
Observers from the independent State of Hawaii and the Secretariat of the Pacific Community were in attendance.
The last time Tonga hosted and chaired the Polynesian Leaders Meetings was in 2017 at its 7th Meeting held in Apia, Samoa
