Fua‘amotu International Airport is set for a major upgrade, with plans to refurbish different areas of the facility supported by the Government of Japan. The Japanese Ambassador to Tonga signed-over grant aid worth (USD) 17.7 million to Prime Minister Hon Dr. ‘Aisake Eke yesterday, 19 August.

The project will include the refurbishment of the international passenger terminal, extension of the apron, installation of new boarding bridges and connecting passages, and improvement to vital infrastructure such as sewage treatment systems and terminal access roads.

The project aims to ease congestion caused by a sharp increase in passenger numbers, while also improving efficiency at check-in counters, security areas, waiting lounges, and immigration checkpoints.

To formalise the the agreement, HE Mr. Inagaki Hisao and PM Hon Dr. ‘Aisake Eke signed the exchange of notes at a ceremony at St. George Building.

Mr. Inagaki said that Japan is committed to supporting this project, which is aligned with the priorities outlined in ‘Tonga’s Strategic Development Framework II.’

PM Eke thanked Japan for their generous support, and their commitment to the project and to Tonga’s development.

The time-frame for the project has not been confirmed by the Prime Minister’s Office.
