Rioter pleads guilty to destruction of Molisi Tonga [1]

Pita Uele of Malapo appeared in the Nuku'alofa Supreme Court on May 8 and pleaded guilty to a charge of the destruction of the Molisi Tonga Supermarket during the riots of November 16, 2006.

The accused was initially charged with six counts on the destruction of Molisi Tonga, riotous assembly, damaging of buildings and two housebreaking charges, and pleaded guilty to all of them.

He pleaded not guilty to a sixth charge was for the destruction of the Shoreline head office.

But the Crown represented by Senior Crown Counsel 'Aminiasi Kefu offered no evidence for this particular charge and withdrew the destruction count on the Shoreline building.

The accused was then read his five remaining counts and Chief Justice Anthony Ford adjourned his sentencing to May 26, where a probation report is to be provided.
