It was party time on the Nuku'alofa waterfront last night with the Jamaican reggae star Shaggy attracting thousands of Tongans young and old to a concert at the Queen Salote Wharf.
Shaggy was brought to Tonga by Digicel Tonga Ltd. to celebrate the launching of its communication network in Tonga.
The free concert started early in the evening and when Shaggy hit the stage before 8 pm, the crowd of about 10,000 went wild and were singing and dancing along to some of Shaggy's hit songs such as Boombastic, Angel, Mr Lover Lover, Strength of a Woman and It Wasn't Me, among many others. Shaggy established a natural rapport with his audience who responded to enthusiastically.
During the first half of the concert there a local hip hop group entertained along with popular local singers Suliasi and Diane Pole'o. A colourful Tongan New Zealand band, the Spacifix, also performed before Shaggy took the stage.
