A new ‘Digital Public Infrastructure’ system was launched by the Tongan Government, yesterday, 29 May in Tongatapu. The new system will make public services easier and faster to access by Tongan citizens.

“This system will help make services reliable, safe and easier to use,” Andrew To'imoana told Matangi Tonga. “It also helps the government be more transparent, since every step in the process is recorded and can be checked.”

Andrew added that this kind of technology is used in many countries and has proven to be very secure. “Even though Tonga has a small population, the system is designed with strong security,” he said.

He said that people's data will be encrypted and all connections between systems are protected. However, Andrew noted that the biggest risk is not the technology or the system, but people oversharing what should be personal information.

“Some people share their passwords or their login details with family members or friends, which can be risky. We need to inform the general public to keep their personal information safe” he said.
