6 new dengue fever cases reported today [1]

Six new Dengue Fever cases were reported in Tonga today, bringing the total to 588 cases confirmed with positive rapid tests since mid-February. The Health Ministry is urging everyone to remain vigilant, emphasising that "Dengue is not over yet." Two deaths last week were attributed to Dengue.
A majority of the confirmed cases were reported in Vava’u with 294 cases, Tongatapu with 237 cases, ‘Eua with 56 cases, and Ha'apai with one.
A total of 8 cases are currently hospitalized: five in Vaiola, two in Niuéiki, and one in Prince Ngu. "They are all in stable condition," Health Ministry stated.
Two dengue-related deaths were both from Tongatapu.
The age group mostly affected is 10-19 years old, with the youngest a 2 months old baby.
Dengue Virus Type 2 (DENV-2) is the responsible virus for this current outbreak in Tonga.
The Health Ministry urged the public to wear appropriate clothing to minimize mosquito bites and use mosquito nets and repellents such as lotion and spray, elliminate all mosquito breeding sites around home and surrounding areas, and implement protective measures to prevent mosquito bites, such as using mosquito nets, repellents, and appropriate clothing.
"If you experience symptoms of dengue fever, drink plenty of water, take paracetamol (Panadol), and ensure you rest well at home."
Meanwhile, severe symptoms such as severe stomach pain, bleeding from the gums, nose, or in vomit, and extreme fatigue or unresponsiveness require immediate medical attention at the nearest health facility.
