Tonga commemorated ANZAC Day at the Pangai Lahi, seafront cenotaph in Nuku’alofa, on 25 April. The Dawn Service honoured the sacrifices of Australian, New Zealand, and Tongan service personnel, and marked 110 years since the Anzac forces landed in Gallipoli, Turkey during World War I in 1915.

Over 200 people attended the service and wreath laying ceremony at the cenotaph on the Tongan Public Holiday.

The Australian High Commissioner, HE Mr. Brek Batley   reflected on the enduring spirit of the Anzacs and the bonds of shared service between Tonga, Australia, and New Zealand.

“Tongan, Australian and New Zealand troops have trained, served, and stood together in conflict, peacekeeping operations and disaster response for over 100 years. That legacy endures,” he said.

“Today, Australia and New Zealand are proud to stand with His Majesty’s Armed Forces of Tonga—bound together by the deep trust that comes from shared service.”

The Acting PM, Taniela Fusimalohi and New Zealand High Commissioner, HE Mr. Matt Howell delivered the Ode of Remembrance, followed by the laying of the wreaths led by HRH Crown Prince Tupouto’a.

The service was hosted by the Australian High Commission in partnership with the New Zealand High Commission and His Majesty’s Armed Forces.

Anzac Day marks the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps landing at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915 during World War I. It commemorates all Australians and New Zealanders who have served and died in wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations. Tonga's contribution and enduring friendship continue to be honoured as part of this shared legacy.
