Tonga's new NZD$32 million parliament complex set to be completed by 2027, was virtually introduced to the visiting New Zealand delegation and members of the parliament, by the Falealea project manager, Andrew Tu’inukuafe, today, 11 April 2025.
It will be built on the Lakalakaimonu Estate within the Tufumahina Royal Estate in Pea, Tongatapu,
Project coordinator, Faka'iloatonga Taumoefolau told Matangi Tonga that contractors Wasteland Construction from the U.S.A. will partner with localt company CaBella Construction on the project.
The previous waterfront location in Nuku’alofa, exposed the Parliament to natural disasters including cyclones and potential sea-level rise, so another site was found.
The new 6-acre location at Pea offers elevated terrain, providing better protection against these environmental hazards. The building is also designed to account for 1% AEP storm events and to withstand wind force of category 5.
The new complex has plans for 84 car park spaces, and will include meeting rooms, media space, a throne room for the King and Royal Family. It will also have a library, kitchen and seven bathrooms amongst other features.
The approved budget for the project is NZD $32 million, jointly funded by the New Zealand and Australian Governments.
