'Apifo'ou College wins first gold at national athletics comp [1]

The TongaHealth Secondary Schools Athletic Sports Competition for 2025 kicked off at Teufaiva Stadium  in Nuku'alofa today, 8 April 2025

The stadium was filled with colour as student athletes from different schools in Tongatapu and the outer islands gathered, to march in the opening ceremony.

The first event for today was the Junior Girls’ 1500m race (three rounds of the track), where the winner was undecided. A girl from Mo’unga Olive College was leading the race when she stopped at the finish line, believing that she had won but, track officials said that she had not completed her three rounds. 

‘Apifo’ou College was later announced as the first place winner for that event.

Apifo’ou College lead during the first heat of the Junior Boys’ 1500m race but, ‘Atele College eventually surpassed the runners winning gold, with ‘Eua second and ‘Apifo’ou at third place.

Other events held today included the long jumps, discus throw, relay race and others.
